Review

The description of all those beautiful yarns brought back my own knitting days and I still love the look and the feel of haberdasheries.

The whole thing was more or less perfect- I say "less" because the first couple of pages didn't grab me, and if they don't grab you either, keep reading because the rest of them most certainly will.

The author paints a lovely picture of a city I've never had any urge to visit, until I read this wonderful tale, and it's not just the descriptions, or the Christmasiness of the story which drew me in, it was the two main characters themselves and the metaphorical journey they go on both separately and together.

And who couldn't fail to adore those gorgeous children, or their even more gorgeous father! I need a Dylan in my life!

Helen was kind enough to answer a couple of questions, so we can get to know her better.

If you could be any age again for a day, what age would it be and why?

This is a tough question to answer as there are so many ages I have enjoyed being!

In a way I’d love to have another day as a child of eight. I still believed in Santa Claus back then and it was also the year it snowed, from memory, so Christmas was all the more magical. There’s something so exciting about going to bed on Christmas Eve and knowing Santa will come and leave presents and a stocking, and waking up was so exciting especially when I saw that the whole of our street was blanketed in white.

Otherwise, I’d like to be in my late twenties. I think I’d learnt a lot about life by then and I’d be savvy enough to enjoy things, appreciate them and make the most of them. I also had the energy to enjoy more Christmas festivities too!

If someone gave you a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

This would be awesome if it ever happened!

Now that I’ve been to New York, I am torn! So I’m going to be awkward and cover two choices…

My first choice would be New York because it was totally amazing. Staying in a brownstone I really felt I was living there – it was noisy, but then I expected that. I would love to go there again because even though I felt like I saw so much, there is a lot still to see. Next time I’d like to make my way over to Brooklyn perhaps, do more of Central Park which was a welcome escape from the mayhem of the city, and I’d like to perhaps see it in the winter instead. On my visit it was glorious sunshine and blue skies, but it would be really interesting to see how the city changed in the colder months.

My other choice would have to be Australia! I lived there for fourteen years and to say I miss it is an understatement. When I was in New York it actually reminded me a lot of Australia, with the wide roads, the yellow taxis, the sun and blue skies. I’d fly into Melbourne, my all time favourite city. I’d be able to walk along the banks of the Yarra, enjoy a hot chocolate in Melbourne’s famous laneways and meet up with friends who I miss dearly.
