Living Dangerously by Katie Fforde

Blurb

Polly Cameron is happy being thirty-five and celibate, living in a small Gloucestershire town with a possessive cat for company and a Rayburn for comfort. After all, a relationship would only complicate things...

But Polly's life is already complicated. In addition to her job in the Whole Nut café and her part in the 'Save Our High Street' campaign, there's her pottery career to get off the ground. Not to mention dodging the efforts of her friends and mother to find her a husband...

Review

I read an old paperback version of this book (I’m convinced it was from the mid-1990s but I can’t check as I gave it to my mum and she’s since passed it on to someone else...). Anyway, the reason for me mentioning this is that the tone and feel of the book is somewhat old-fashioned and a bit yesteryear. This isn’t a bad thing, it merely adds to its charm. I had the feeling I’d been transported back even further, to perhaps the 1950s and into a rather upper class English society.

The style of writing is more in-depth and less frivolous and superficial than the style of present-day chick lit novels, and Ms Fforde uses longer words too! This book is a lovely trip down memory lane when mobile phones have yet to be invented and the pace of life was that little bit slower.

About the Author I live in the beautiful Cotswold countryside with my family, and I’m a country girl at heart. I first started writing when my mother gave me a writing kit for Christmas, and once I started I just couldn’t stop. Living Dangerously was my first novel and since then, I haven’t looked back. Ideas for books are everywhere, and I’m constantly inspired by the people and places around me. From watching TV (yes, it is research) to overhearing conversations, I love how my writing gives me the chance to taste other people’s lives and try all the jobs I’ve never had. Each of my books explores a different profession or background and my research has helped me bring these to life. I’ve been a porter in an auction house, tried my hand at pottery, refurbished furniture, delved behind the scenes of a dating website, and I’ve even been on a Ray Mears survival course. I love being a writer; to me there isn’t a more satisfying and pleasing thing to do. I particularly enjoy writing love stories. I believe falling in love is the best thing in the world, and I want all my characters to experience it, and my readers to share their stories. I love hearing from all my readers on Twitter @KatieFforde or on Facebook at facebook.com/KatieFforde
