Is Sea View Guest House real?

“Overlooking picturesque Honeycombe Bay, Sea View Guest House offers a warm and welcoming escape. From its characterful exterior to its cosy, well-appointed rooms, guests can enjoy a homely atmosphere and friendly hospitality. Comfy beds will guarantee a restful night’s sleep, and a hearty home-cooked breakfast made with locally sourced ingredients will set you up for a day of exploring the quaint village of Honeycombe.

If you want to get away from the stress and strain of Christmas, this delightful guest house combines comfort, character and genuine Devonshire charm.”

Holiday poster on a corkboard reads Avoid Christmas at The Sea View Guest House, with a snowy tree and ribbon graphics.

This was the advert dancing in my head when I put Sea View Guest House at the heart of CHRISTMAS AT HONEYCOMBE BAY. I could see the main character, Bart, sitting down to write it, using only his index fingers as he jabbed at the old computer’s keyboard. His wife used to be the more computer literate one, but she’s gone now…

Of course, the guest house isn’t real, but versions of it exist all across the UK, and I based Sea View on several I’ve stayed in over the years. In fact, I amalgamated them, taking the best bits, or the bits that worked well for the story, and combining them into the guest house that lived in my imagination. I wanted it to be a homely, cosy place, that’s not too modern (a little on the old-fashioned side, in fact), with glorious views out over the bay. It sits at the end of a quiet, secluded road, and serves the most wonderful breakfasts. And let’s face it, who can resist a home-cooked brekkie with fruit, yoghurt, cereal to start if you want it, and unlimited toast? And as Bart prides himself on his cooking, guests will be in for a treat!

I also loved the idea of setting a Christmas romance somewhere where people are constantly coming and going. A guest house is such a wonderful setting for a story because, by its very nature, it brings people together. However, Sea View wasn’t actually accepting guests when the story begins, and I really enjoyed seeing Bart opening up both his guest house and his heart.

Sadly, I can't give you directions to Sea View Guest House or take your booking, but you can visit it in the pages of CHRISTMAS AT HONEYCOMBE BAY.

If you fancy escaping to a cosy Devonshire guest house in the depths of winter without having to pack a suitcase, go make a cup of tea, put your feet up and come with me to Honeycombe Bay to see what happens when a few unexpected visitors arrive and Christmas decides to pay a visit too!
