Does it matter where you write?

No, just as long as you do write!

Lilacc Mills' home office with a desk, computer, and swivel chair. A corkboard with notes hangs above. Notebooks and pens are on the light wood desk.

Being an author doesn't mean you need an office, or even a desk (this is my workspace).

When I first put pen to paper (literally, because I began by handwriting my novels) I used to sit curled up in an armchair with a cheap A4 notepad and a biro.

Blue garden shed with open doors, revealing a cozy chair and bookshelf. Purple hydrangeas are in the foreground, creating a serene scene.

I still write in my armchair and I also write in my summer house, but instead of using pen and paper, I now use a tablet and an epencil.

Tablet on wooden surface displaying handwritten text "I love my ReMarkable!" with a stylus beside it.

But I've also written in the car using my phone, in a cafe using a napkin (I had an idea, okay? - don't judge), and at the kitchen table using a laptop before I converted the spare room into an office.

But my writing isn't dictated by where I am. I write where I can and when I can, using whatever method is at hand. Oh, and since I've mentioned the word 'dictate', I do that too sometimes, using my phone - but I have to really be in the mood for that, which only happens a handful of times in each manuscript and I can only do that in my living room. Go figure!

Anywaaay, what I'm trying to say is... don't wait for the right set-up. Just get that story in your head written.
